Cookie Policy

Which cookies this site sets, what each is for, and how to turn off the ones you do not want.

This page lists the cookies midfield.live uses and what each is for. It sits alongside the privacy policy, which covers personal data more broadly.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store and send back on your next visit. It is how a site recognises that two page loads came from the same person. Some are deleted when you close the browser; others persist until they expire or you clear them.

Cookies we set

Essential. These make the site function and cannot be turned off from within it.

  • A session cookie, so that signing in survives from one page to the next
  • A security token used to verify that forms were submitted from this site and not by somebody else on your behalf
  • A preference cookie remembering display choices such as dark mode

Analytics. Google Analytics cookies record which pages are read, how visitors arrive, and roughly how long they stay. They are reported to us in aggregate. We use this to decide what to cover and what to fix. Blocking them costs you nothing on the site.

Advertising. Our advertising partners set cookies to select which advertisements to show, to limit how often you see the same one, and to measure whether a campaign worked. Some support interest-based advertising, which uses browsing history across sites. These are set by the advertising partners, not by us, and are governed by their privacy policies.

Third-party cookies

Some cookies come from services embedded in our pages rather than from us directly:

  • Google Analytics, for audience measurement
  • Google, for sign-in if you choose to use it, and for advertising
  • Embedded media, where video and social embeds may set cookies when a page containing them loads
  • Content delivery and security providers, which may set a cookie to distinguish legitimate visitors from automated traffic

Controlling cookies

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually under privacy settings. You can block third-party cookies while keeping the ones that make sites work, which is a reasonable default and will not break this site.

Blocking essential cookies will stop sign-in and commenting from working. Everything else, including reading articles, browsing the archive and looking up a scorecard, works with cookies off entirely.

For advertising specifically, Google's own ad settings let you turn off personalised advertising across the services that use them, and the industry opt-out pages run by the Digital Advertising Alliance and the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance cover a wider set of networks.

Do Not Track

Browsers can send a Do Not Track signal. There is no agreed standard for how sites should respond to it, and we do not currently change our behaviour based on it. The controls described above are effective regardless.

Changes

This list changes when the services we use change. The date at the top will be updated when it does.
